Cornea

Cornea Transplant Treatment in KPHB, Hyderabad

What is Cornea?

Cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. It acts as a protective layer, allowing light to enter the eye, focusing it onto the retina, thus enabling vision. This vital structure plays a crucial role in refracting light and maintaining the eye's shape and clarity

Common Corneal Problems:

  1. Pterygium: It is an abnormal fleshy growth of tissue that extends from the conjunctiva (a membrane that covers the white of the eye) onto the cornea. Pterygia may be small, or grow large enough to interfere with vision and cause irritation. They can be observed in early stages with symptomatic treatment, but will ultimately require surgical excision with grafting if they progress.
  2. Keratoconus: Keratoconus is an eye disease that causes the cornea to thin and bulge into a cone shape, resulting in blurred vision, increasing astigmatism and other visual issues. The most common risk factor is eye rubbing. They can be observed in early stages. Options for visual rehabilitation include spectacles, Rigid Contact Lens, Laser Corrective Procedures or Corneal Transplantation in advanced cases.
  3. Corneal Ulcers: They are a type of inflammation of the cornea. They are typically caused by infection (Bacterial, Fungal, Viral), but can also be caused by injury. Treatment involves medical management with drops. In advanced cases the cornea may be thinned due to infection, which may require stabilization with Glue or Therapeutic Keratoplasty.
  4. Allergic Eye Disease: : Allergic eye disease, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, is a common condition that occurs when the conjunctiva, the tissue that covers the white of the eye and lines the eyelids, becomes inflamed or swollen. It can be caused by a number of factors, including genetics, air pollution, and contact with pets. Mild cases may be treated with topical Antihistamines. More severe cases require steroid treatment under strict supervision.
  5. Dry eye: Dry eye is an irritating eye condition that occurs when either the eyes don’t make enough tears or the tears evaporate more than usual. It may be due to a number of causes like Blepharitis, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, Digital Eye Strain, Computer Vision Syndrome. Thorough evaluation is necessary to find the cause.
